Jomsom-Muktinath-Poon Hill Trek

Jomsom, the district headquarters of Mustang district, is a beautiful Thakali settlement and a popular stopover on the famous Annapurna Circuit trekking trail. Jomsom is famous for Thakali people who are renowned for their hospitality and culinary art . Jomsom is a hub for pilgrims heading to the temple of Muktinath situated at an altitude of 3800m, the pagoda style temple devoted to Lord Shiva. There are 108 water sprouts where pilgrims take bath, before worshipping the main shrine in the temple. There is also a small volcano in the temple premises which pilgrim worship as Jwala Devi or the Goddess of Fire.

Jomsom Muktinath Trek as it is commonly known is also a part of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. The natural beauty along the Jomsom Muktinath Trekking is breathtaking. Jomsom Muktinath Trekking Package begins from Pokhara and passes through the Valley of Kali Gandaki River to the pilgrim site of Muktinath. The scenery of the trail ranges from the forests of brilliant red rhododendrons to rocky cliffs and desert of Mustang. Jomsom Muktinath trek trail follows the Kali Gandaki River. This river forms the largest gorge in the world and on one side lies the Annapurna mountain range and on the other side lays the Dhaulagiri. Between the two ranges, there are views of 8 of the 20 highest mountains in the world. The Kali Gandaki is a quarter of a mile wide river bed and during the winters the river is practically dry but during the summers and monsoons, the water level rises with rainwater and melting snow. You can find fossil rocks in the banks of Kali Gandaki River which is believed to be sacred for the Hindus.

The culture among Jomsom Muktinath Trek is rich with religious mixture of Hindus and Tibetan Buddhist faction. Jomsom Muktinath Trek weaves through the Lower Mustang region of Nepal ending at the village of Kagbeni which is a Tibetan influenced village filled with prayer wheels, chortens and a Buddhist monastery.

The highest point on this trail is Muktinath at 3800 meters – a holy site of temples that has been sacred to both Buddhist’s and Hindu’s for centuries. Between Tatopani and Lete Khola, there is a dramatic change of scenery. Pine forests crowd in on the trail and the villages take on a quite different appearance. The layout of the villages and the design of the houses are unique to this area. The houses are designed to protect the inhabitants from the strong winds that blow up the valley everyday from the late morning onwards. Jomsom Muktinath Trek includes Poonhill from where amazing sunrise tour with breathtaking view of Annapurna and Fishtail Himalaya range, Tukuche which is known as a best typical village in this area and Apple garden, sacred place Muktinath Temple, Hot water pond and Jomsom Bazar. 

Itinerary at a glance

Day01: Arrival in Kathmandu, Overnight at hotel with welcome dinner.
Day02: Drive by tourist bus (6-7 hr) to Pokhara and transfer to hotel.
Day03: Early morning fly Pokhara to Jomsom (2710m) and trek to Kagbeni (2800m)
Day04: Trek Kagbeni to Muktinath (3800m)
Day05: Trek Muktinath to Jomson (2700m)
Day06: Trek Jomson to kalopani (2530m)
Day07: Trek Kalopani to Tatopani (1190m)
Day08: Rest day at Tatopani (Relax Hotel Spring)
Day09: Trek Tatopani to Ghorepani (2800m)
Day10: Early morning visit Poon hill (3210m) and trek down to Tikhedunga (1540m)
Day11: Trek Tikhedhunga (1540m) to Nayapul via Birethanti. Trekking trip end at Nayapul. Drive to Pokhara and transfer to the hotel. Rest of the time free day.
Day12: Fly back to Kathmandu and Depart
